Description
This is a painting of the late fashion designer Alexander McQueen’s Gold skull. I painted it in thick gold metallics to give him a defined third dimension and this image has become my most signature piece. The skull, of course, is a memento mori, a reminder of death and McQueen frequently juxtaposed the glamour of the catwalk with intimations of our coming doom. Skulls represent death and are a sharp reminder of our mortality. Nevertheless, they are much more than that, especially in the creative realm. They depict change and transformation while other cultures associate them with strength and even protection.
