Carina Wagenaar (b. Netherlands, 1969) graduated from the Amsterdam University of the Arts in Textile Design and Art History. Her life-sized medallions are intriguing wall objects inspired by cameos, lace, relics, and narrative symbolism. Expressions of feelings, thoughts, spirituality, and world events are translated into these large works of art. Utilising the shape of the medallion, in which the past can be preserved, she combines ancient Egyptian wisdom with modern ideas, as well as being inspired by historical figures from the Dutch Golden Age.
In 2015, Wagenaar was nominated by the Van Gogh Museum for her medallion artwork 'Letters to Theo', inspired by the painting 'The Bedroom' by Vincent van Gogh. In 2019, she collaborated with the high-end department store De Bijenkorf in a beautiful shop window in The Hague, in which her artworks were combined with art from the 17th century. Wagenaar was also awarded 'Most Innovative Object D'Art Interior Decor Artist’ by the Build Architecture Awards in 2020. Her work is highly appreciated internationally and has been exhibited in Milan, New York, Paris, London, Florence, Dubai and Antwerp, as well as throughout the Netherlands.
Selected exhibitions: Spotting the Brightness, Eclectic Gallery, London (2021); Captured, Think Jazzy Gallery, Antwerp (2021); Co van der Horst, Kunst + Co, Amstelveen (2021); Vught, Van Loon Galleries (2020); Ode To The Old Masters, Amsterdam Expo (2019).
