Curator's Eye

Salma Eltoukhy’s work explores notions of identity through the reinterpretation of traditional Arabic calligraphy and poetry. Believing that an individual’s spontaneous writing can reveal deeper layers of character and personality, Eltoukhy tells a visual story through her work, with her diary as the protagonist. Acting as a series of surreal literary portraits, layers of distorted Arabic text cascade down the canvas, and at times off the page altogether. Provocative, thoughtful work.
