Curator's Eye

By uniting the surreal and the mundane, Cha Min-Young’s work is inhabited by both the familiar and the extraordinary. Min-Young offers an insight into an alternate reality; one that is ever-present just beyond the boundaries of our own known existence. Encouraging the viewer to look beyond what first meets the eye, she injects uncanny pockets of life into found objects that would otherwise be overlooked and invisible - ultimately allowing the viewer to question their perception of life beyond their own. A big hit when she showed at START Art Fair at the Saatchi Gallery.

Underpass is a representative urban nonplace made for multiple passages. An underpass is an anonymous passage for the purpose of crossing that can be seen anywhere in a large city. The underpass placed in the frame of the small bag is actually a closed structure, but by hiding the end of the passageway through which light leaks out of sight, it is created to look like an open space connected somewhere. The allusion to the open passage and the warm daylight light touches the desires and emotions of various individuals for deviance that exist behind the closed urban space.
